This, it seems, is the aggressor’s foremost consideration in HOI4: How mean can I be before the democratic powers of the world draw a line in the sand and come to the aid of my hapless conquerees? How big and powerful can I get before dragging the entire world into a war either with or against me? A mission system based on historical events, such as the remilitarization of the Rhineland on the French border, guides you along your nation’s traditional narrative.
Britain didn’t seem to buy my excuse that the readers of IGN wanted to hear about the military aspects of the game, and promptly declared war on me as I was beginning to push into Poland. Maybe in another life, another save file, we can be friends, Czechoslovakia. But then I wouldn’t have been able to tell you how all the Panzers and Messerschmitts work, so I immediately began supporting a fascist coup in Austria and demanding the Sudetenland. I could plausibly have sat on my laurels and found my people some lebensraum out in the Bavarian countryside. I held the fate of Europe and the legacy of the Reich in my hands then, it seemed.
